The Nike Air Max 97 "Shanghai Kaleidoscope" is one of six winning designs from Nike's "On Air" collection of Air Max models.
In 2018, Nike invited venues in Shanghai, Seoul, New York City, London, Paris and Tokyo to design their own colorways on an Air Max model of their choice. Eighteen finalists were then voted on by the public, with one winner for each city.
Cash Ru was chosen to represent Shanghai and created this special version of the Air Max 97. According to Cash, the absolutely unique construction is inspired by "floating and disappearing clouds over the futuristic city of Shanghai".
The nickname "Kaleidoscope" comes from the way the clouds in the sky interact with Shanghai's tall skyscrapers.
The cloud-like aesthetic is achieved with multiple layers of open panels made of a translucent blue material that creates an airy effect through the wavy upper. The refreshing light blue hue is complemented by a white tongue and sole unit, with red Swoosh branding providing contrast.
Multiple tabs on the tongue and heel add a unique finishing touch. The Nike Air Max 97 "Shanghai Kaleidoscope" was released on April 13, 2019.
